France vs Morocco Quarter-Final Preview: Can the Atlas Lions Shock the World Again?

By July 3, 2026July 10th, 2026No Comments
France vs Morocco

Four years ago in Qatar, France ended Morocco’s historic World Cup run with a 2-0 victory in the semi-finals. Now, the two sides meet again—this time in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The stakes are just as high. The storylines are just as compelling.

Didier Deschamps’ France have been flawless so far, winning all five of their matches with a tournament-high 14 goals. Morocco, the reigning Africa Cup of Nations champions, are on a staggering 34-match unbeaten run and have become the first African team to reach back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals.

Something has to give.

How They Got Here

France’s Perfect Record

France are one of only two sides to have won every game at this tournament, Argentina being the other. Their path has been commanding:

– 3-1 vs Senegal

– 3-0 vs Iraq

– 4-1 vs Norway

– 3-0 vs Sweden in the Round of 32

– 1-0 vs Paraguay in the Round of 16

Kylian Mbappé scored the only goal against Paraguay from the penalty spot in the 70th minute, his seventh of the tournament. France have scored 14 goals and conceded just 2. They have yet to fall behind in any match.

Morocco’s Historic Run

Morocco’s journey has been equally impressive. They topped Group C with seven points from games against Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti. In the Round of 32, Issa Diop scored a dramatic 91st-minute equaliser against the Netherlands before Morocco won 3-2 on penalties. They then dispatched Canada 3-0 in the Round of 16.

Coach Mohamed Ouahbi took over just 98 days before the World Cup. He has yet to lose a match in charge, with six wins and four draws. This is uncharted territory for Moroccan football—back-to-back World Cup quarter-finals.

Key Players to Watch

France

– Kylian Mbappé – With 18 career World Cup goals, the French captain is one behind Lionel Messi’s all-time record of 19. He is the tournament’s joint-top scorer with seven goals and is chasing history.

– Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, and Michael Olise – France’s attacking quartet is arguably the most formidable in the tournament. Dembélé, Barcola, and Olise have all been in outstanding form, stretching defences and creating opportunities for Mbappé to exploit.

– Aurelien Tchouameni – France expect him back from a thigh injury that kept him out of the Paraguay win. His presence in midfield will be crucial against Morocco’s physical, energetic unit.

Mozocco

– Achraf Hakimi – The Paris Saint-Germain right-back is the core of Morocco’s attack, working in close coordination with Brahim Diaz on the right flank. His battles with Mbappé will be one of the game’s defining matchups.

– Azzedine Ounahi – The Marseille midfielder scored twice against Canada and is the player France’s midfield will need to track. His energy and ability to break lines make him a constant threat.

– Ismael Saibari – Morocco’s leading scorer is a major doubt with a hamstring injury. His absence would be a significant blow to Morocco’s attacking options.

Tactical Battle

France will look to stretch Morocco wide, isolating Mbappé and Barcola against Hakimi and the Moroccan full-backs. Olise will operate between the lines, creating opportunities through the channels. Deschamps’ side has the firepower to hurt any team in the world.

Morocco, as they have done all tournament, will stay compact and force France into crosses. They will look to break quickly through Hakimi and Rahimi on the counter-attack. Morocco are not expected to match France in possession, but they have the pace and discipline to make them pay in transition.

The key question is whether Morocco’s defensive structure can limit Mbappé’s opportunities in the box. No team has managed it so far. But Morocco’s midfield—their great strength—will be crucial in disrupting France’s rhythm.

“The quarter-final should offer the clearest indication yet of whether France’s attacking quartet can continue to bend the tournament to their will against opponents capable of hurting them in transition and testing their defensive balance,” wrote The Athletic.

Head-to-Head History

France and Morocco have met six times previously. France have won four, Morocco have won one, and one match ended in a draw.

Their only World Cup meeting was the 2022 semi-final in Qatar, which France won 2-0. That victory ended Morocco’s miraculous run. Morocco will be desperate for revenge.

The last time Morocco beat France was in 1988—a 2-1 victory in the Tournoi de France. Since then, France have dominated the fixture, winning four and drawing two of the subsequent meetings.

Prediction

France are favourites for good reason. They have been the most complete side in the tournament, with the best attack and one of the best defences. Mbappé is chasing history, and the French squad is packed with big-game experience.

But Morocco are not to be underestimated. Their 34-match unbeaten run is no fluke. They have beaten or drawn against Brazil, the Netherlands, and Canada. They are disciplined, organised, and dangerous on the counter-attack.

Expect Morocco to make this difficult. But France’s quality should eventually tell.

Prediction: France 2-1 Morocco

Final Thoughts

This is a rematch of one of the most memorable World Cup semi-finals in recent history. Morocco stunned the world in 2022. Now they have a chance to go one step further.

Can France’s attacking quartet bend the tournament to their will? Can Morocco’s defensive structure hold firm against the world’s best attack?

We’ll find out when the whistle blows at 4:00 PM ET at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
